Simple Homemade Cinnamon Apple Chips

Cinnamon Apple Chips

Hard to believe that September is here and the smell of Fall is just around the corner **eeep**!  Fall is by far, my favorite season…with good reason.  These Simple Homemade Cinnamon Apple Chips, for one thing, are a clue as to why that is.

Soon the leaves will start turning colors and falling off the tree limbs.  Windows will start opening up to allow the cooler breeze in.  Not long after that, ovens will start emitting the most beautiful aromas ever to cross our paths and lull us into a wonderful Fall coma.

Now, some of you might think I’m getting ahead of myself with this recipe but I’m hoping those Fall lovers out there will agree with me in saying…you’re wrong 😉  Really, today’s recipe is a nice starting point for Fall treats and snacks.  It doesn’t require much aside from a little time and about three (3) ingredients.  How’s that for keeping things simple?!

Getting Prepped

These Pink Lady Apples have a mildly sweet tart taste and worked really nice for me in this recipe.  Of course, feel free to choose another apple of your liking but keep in mind you want an apple that will hold up while baking and isn’t overly sweet.  Other great options: Braeburn or Gala.  If you go with a sweeter apple, such as a Honeycrisp, then cut back on the sugar (if you want ;).

Wash and dry your apples and remove stems.  With a sharp knife, carefully slice off the top portion of the apple to where the stem attaches.

Cinnamon Apple Crisps

Carefully begin slicing the apples as thin as you can get them, placing them in a bowl as you do.  You can also use a Mandoline Slicer if you prefer and you can get one here and here but it’s not required if you have a really good and sharp knife.  Remove seeds and discard.

Cinnamon Apple Crisps

Most local grocery stores sell a Cinnamon Sugar mix that’s ready to go but I just make this combination on my own here at home since I already have those ingredients in my pantry at all times.  Lay your thin apple slices in a single layer on the prepared parchment lined baking sheets (two) and add a light sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mix.  If you like a little extra sweetness, flip the slices over and sprinkle again.  If you want them a little on the heavier side with cinnamon, sprinkle a little extra on them. Choice is yours!

Cinnamon Apple Crisps

Don’t they look pretty! They don’t have to be complete cuts or entirely round slices either.  They are homemade and these little imperfect slices are perfectly fine with me!

Baking

Next thing ya gotta do is bake them in a preheated oven for approximately 1 1/2-2 hours.  After the first hour, flip each slice over and continue baking.  After the next half an hour goes by, check to see how they look.  They will shrink and darken in color, which means they’re ready.

When done, remove from oven and let them cool down.  They will not be firm and crisp until after they have cooled completely so don’t panic if they’re still a little floppy.  (Note:  I baked these for an hour and 45 minutes, which some might consider burned but I prefer them a little on the darker side, like my heart! Just kidding, I’m sweet on the inside 😉

Cinnamon Apple Chips

The hardest part of this process is trying to make them last through the next hour!  Needless to say, they tend to disappear pretty quickly in this house. *Hello, Snackers here*  A second batch had to be made after this one disappeared!  Every time I walked passed the table, a couple chips disappeared.

Thinly sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and baked to a crisp chip! Perfect for fall snacking!

Course: Snack
Cuisine: American
Author: Cori
Ingredients
  • 2 medium Pink Lady Apples
  • 3 tbsp Sugar, granulated
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon, ground
Directions
  1. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.

  2. In a small bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon and set aside.

  3. Preheat oven to 200 degrees (F).  Wash and dry apples.  Remove stems and using a sharp knife (or mandoline slicer), carefully cut apple into thin slices.  Remove seeds and discard.

  4. Place slices in a single layer on parchment.  It's okay if they overlap slightly.  Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mix (on both sides if you desire).

  5. Bake for an hour then remove from oven and turn each slice over.  Return to oven and continue baking for another 30 minutes. When apples are ready, they will shrink and darken in color.  When done, remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
